On or around Valentine's Day when their attention span is set to 5 - 10 minutes tops (at least that's how it seems), keep your students motivated to practice their factoring skills with this cute Valentine's Day themed unit. Students work together to solve problems and create a Happy Valentine's Day card. The winning team receives a Valentine's Day coupon to give to anyone of their choice. There's also a bonus question to give multiple groups a chance to win the coupon. Students will be engaged and learning, especially such an essential concept such as factoring.
Students practice all types of factoring: by finding the greatest common factor, difference of squares, difference/sum of cubes, factoring by grouping, trinomials with leading coefficients equal to and greater than one, and they also have to solve by factoring.
