This activity is a perfect way to introduce, practice, or quickly refresh the concept of idioms. And what better time to talk all about idioms than Valentine's Day?
This packet includes three sets of cards that include:
- 3 character choices + 1 blank
- 7 Valentine's Day events/settings + 1 blank
- 11 idioms with illustrations + 1 blank
There is also a mini-anchor chart as well as six publishing pages for the stories that kids create.
To use, simply print out the cards on cardstock and divide into three-four piles (I will often make two piles of characters). Have a student pull one card from each pile. He/she will then have the ingredients to start a great Valentine's story with one-two characters, an event/setting, and an idiom to use.
The results of this activity are so unique and enjoyable! Kids can take this in sweet or funny direction- up to you and them! The only directions I give is that the story has to include the elements from the cards they pulled and as many additional idioms as they think fits!
Share these stories during your Valentine's Day Party :)
