What educators are saying

My students had so much fun using this resource. We did the "heart freeze" as a large group. It worked well and it got them up and moving. They were very engaged.
Turned this into a wrote the room activity and the kiddos really enjoyed it. We also hid the letters and cards in a sensory bin and they searched for them

Description

Looking for some fun ways to learn literacy skills this Valentine's Day? This set of Valentine literacy activities is just the way to learn letters, initial sounds, sight words, and letter formation - all while learning through play!

Start with a heart alphabet activity called Heart Freeze! Scatter the lettered hearts around the room, sing the freeze song, and mark the letters by which you freeze! There's even a way to play this Valentine's Day game with sight words!

Next, work on letter formation by pairing the alphabet hearts with a salt tray. Fill it with colored sand and heart beads to make it even more engaging for your little ones to work on writing their letters.

Last, go on a Heart Hunt to work on identifying initial sounds. Find one of the hearts with initial sound pictures (all with Valentine-themed words) around the room. Name the initial sound, flip over to self-check, and trace the corresponding letter on the recording sheet.

Your students will have so much fun learning with these Valentine's Day centers, they won't even realize it!

Here's what you'll get (in both color and black & white):

  • Heart Hunt recording sheets (uppercase & lowercase)
  • hearts with letters on one side and initial sound pictures on the other (print double-sided)
  • hearts with candy heart phrases on them
  • blank hearts
  • Heart Freeze recording sheets (uppercase, lowercase, & 4 sight word variations)
  • hearts with sight words (the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I, at, be, this, have)

Materials needed for these Valentine's literacy activities:

  • salt tray with a paintbrush
  • Optional: clipboards
