Add and Subtract within 20
• CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
• CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
★ Designed to be printed out back to back with plain valentines without facts printing on the reverse side.
1. First run pages 3-18.
2. Then place the subtraction valentine sheets face up and facing you in the printer tray.
3. Now, print pages 19-34. The backings will be printed on the reverse side.
4. Finally, just cut each sheet on the paper cutter into 12 rectangular cards.
OR print out entire file as is and glue backings to plain sides of subtraction shamrocks.
5. Pages 35-39 are optional recording sheets in color (if you want to laminate and use erasable markers) and black and white to copy and record in pencil.
6. Pages 40 &41 are optional Subtraction Awards in color and black and white.
★ Game 1: Select the cards that are appropriate for your students. Place cards face down in a pile. Students roll a die to see how many cards they can pick. Students keep each card that they correctly solve. The game is over when all valentines have been drawn. The winner is the student with the most cards. Facts can be recorded on the optional recording sheets.
★ Game 2: Select 10 pairs of cards with the same answer for each pair. Place those 20 cards face down in 4 rows of five. Students play Memory or Concentration, turning over 2 cards at a time and keeping them if they have the same solution. The game is over when all cards are gone. The winner is the student with the most valentines. Keep cards that belong together in individual baggies. Students can record the facts.
★ Game 3: Select the facts that a group of students needs to practice. Students line up the cards as though they are on a race track or path. This creates a “follow the path” type game. Each student has a game token. Students take turns rolling a die, moving that number of spaces and solving the fact that is on the space where the student lands. Students can record the facts on the optional recording sheets.
