Have fun in February with these Valentine's Day math activities to practice non-standard measurement. Students will use conversation hearts and/or cinnamon hearts as a non-standard unit to measure items on the center cards as well as in their classrooms.

To complete the tasks, students place the units directly on the card to measure and record on the accompanying recording sheet.

Another version requires students to find things in the classroom and measure the object with either cinnamon hearts or conversation hearts and record the answer on a recording sheet or the laminated Find and Measure card.

Here are the four different ways the materials can be used:

❤️Use the Measure Me! Cards in a center with cinnamon hearts or conversation hearts. Students choose a card, measure with the non-standard unit and record it on their tracking sheet.

❤️Place the Measure Me! Cards on flat surfaces around the room with a pile of the unit for measuring (conversation hearts or cinnamon hearts) and students move around, measure, record and then clean it off for the next student.

❤️Place the Find and Measure cards and a container of the unit being used to measure at a center. Students go and retrieve the item and measure and record the measurement on the recording sheet.

❤️Laminate the Find and Measure cards and have students perform the measurement task but record the measurement right on the cards with a dry-erase marker.

Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
