Help your students phonological awareness in fun, fresh way with this phonological awareness activity.

This document includes:

Sound/Letter Knowledge

  • A teacher page and a student page
  • Students are asked what sounds are made by letters, what letters make specific sounds, and to show knowledge of letter names by circling letters specified on the teacher page.

Syllables

  • A teacher page and a student page
  • Students are asked to listen to each word, and count the number of syllables they hear in each word. The teacher page includes the directions, and the student page has pictures for each word.

Rhyming

  • A teacher page and a student page
  • Identifying rhymes--Students look at a picture, and are asked to choose which word rhymes with the word the teacher says.
  • Producing rhymes--Students are given a rhyme and asked to produce more words that rhyme with the given word.

Beginning and Ending Sounds

  • A teacher page and student page
  • Students are given pictures, and asked to identify the beginning and ending sounds from the pictures. Beginning and ending sounds are mixed together, and the directions are varied (ie "what's the beginning sound" and "tell me the first sound") to increase generalization of skills

Segmenting, Blending, and Manipulating Phonemes

  • A teacher page and student page
  • Students are given pictures, and asked to segment, blend, and manipulate phonemes in the words. Items are divided into segmenting, blending, and manipulating phonemes.

  • Home Practice Sheet-The home practice sheet combines rhyming, segmenting, blending, and manipulating in parent-friendly language.
