Description

Are you ready for a STEM Challenge for Valentine’s Day! Here’s a fabulous STEM project that uses measuring, volume, estimation, design, building, and a little bit of artistic flair! Best of all, there is candy involved in this STEM activity and that is a sure-fire way to keep students engaged.

This challenge is available in a money-saving bundle!

What is the challenge?

In this challenge, students will design a candy box that will exactly hold a specific amount of candy. They will have a few pieces to use in helping plan the box. They will build and decorate the box and then test it to see if the dimensions are perfect. And, since this is a Valentine box, it must be heart-shaped! Along the way, they will have the chance to pre-test the box and make adjustments in its size if they feel changes are needed. After improving and finishing, each team will present its work and then test it with all of the candy. Which group will have the perfect fit? Can the teams decorate in a creative or unusual way?

What is your prep?

You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes Clear tape, Card stock, Copy paper, Construction paper, Straws, String or yarn, Glue sticks, and CANDY!

NOTE: This challenge is pictured as a challenge for Valentine's Day. However, you can use this at any time of the year. We made heart-shaped boxes for Valentine's Day candy. IDEAS FOR boxes at different times of the year: Halloween pumpkins, winter snowmen, St. Patrick's Day pot of gold, Spring basket with jellybeans.

The package specifically includes

  • Cover
  • Teacher background
  • Materials and preparation page
  • 5 pages of teacher directions
  • Constraints list in 2 versions
  • 4 pages of photographs
  • 2 versions of a lab sheet
  • Scoring rubric
  • BONUS Christmas Version
  • An idea page and generic forms for using this challenge at any time of year are included.
  • All forms are provided in an editable format.

This challenge works great with Christmas candy, too! The directions and lab sheets are included to use at Christmas time!

This challenge will need 1-2 class sessions to complete. We completed it in one hour.
