What a perfect blend of grocery-store chemistry and Valentine’s Day! Students will enjoy and remember making crystal hearts out of pipe cleaners and a saturated crystal solution. The procedure to make the crystals is completely described and includes tips on preparing the boric acid crystal solution and factors that affect the size of the crystals. To run the activity, you need hot water and borax, which can be found in the detergent aisle of some grocery stores. There is also ordering information for those that prefer Amazon. After the crystals are pulled from the solution, they can be dried and attached using pushpins to make an attractive, in-class crystal bulletin board!
