VALENTINE'S STATIONS

This is the ultimate in science skills review. You could use this for physical science, physics, or even chemistry. These are skills used for each of those subjects. There are 6 stations that include differentiated activities to help all students succeed and enjoy the day. Below is a description of each station:

Students read through the background information of chromatography, what it's used for, and the general types of mixtures. The scenario goes that a student receives a letter from a secret admirer with a stack of mystery pens and a clue that says "find me". Students use chromatography, collecting data, measurements, and calculating Rf factors to match their pen to the unknown and identify the pen that was used.

Station #2: The Metal of Cupid's Arrow
Students begin by reading a tutorial on density, including a QR code and URL for a video about the origin of Cupid and his arrows. After the background information, students conduct a density lab to identify the material of the unknown cubes. After collecting data, students calculate density, identify accuracy and precision, and calculate percent error.

Station #3: Recipe Conversion
For this stations, students are given a recipe of chocolate cherry fudge. The scenario goes that they are to make enough of the fudge to provide each student of the class with 2 pieces. Students will then calculate conversions for each ingredient based on unit and amount needed for batches.

For this station, students read a passage regarding the science behind falling in love. They will answer comprehension questions, watch a Ted talks video about crushes, and summarize. Students can access the video by either QR code or URL.

Station #5: Graphing
Students will read through proper graphing techniques and rules. After the tutorial, students will analyze a graph and answer mathematical based questions, as well as, determine the independent and dependent variables.

Station #6: Get Creative
Time for some fun and all the feels! Students will be provided with a template for a Valentine's day card and asked to decorate, come up with a sentiment (science related is encouraged), and deliver it to some one special. There is even a list of ideas for who to make a card for...not just crushes.

The prep for the teacher is minimal and you can tailor the stations to meet your needs. For instance, if you want to spend a couple days completing all 6 stations that great, if not, just assign a few for a day. It's up to you.

Enjoy!
