This is a fun activity for Valentine's Day to get students out of their seats and work on defining words as well as expressive language. There are 10 vocabulary words for 3rd grade and 10 vocabulary words for 4th grade (A little disclaimer - I found these from the internet, so not sure if they are accurate for the grade levels). Each word is on a wheelbarrow and the definition is on a heart. The goal of the activity is to match the heart with the correct wheelbarrow. You can cut these out and laminate them and then tape them on the board for students to get up and find the correct pair. Once students find the right pair I like to have them use the word in a sentence to work on their expressive language. To make it easier you can use only 10 words at one time.
The words and definitions are provided if you want to introduce the words to the students before the activity. Then there are two worksheets with sentences where the students needs to fill in the correct word (a word bank is provided). This is great for high functioning 3rd graders to increase their knowledge and learn and use words that are above their level, it’s a great review for 4th graders, and its also good for lower functioning 4th or 5th graders.
Copies of the worksheet with the answers is also provided
