Students are able to explore the traditions celebrated around the world with this complete week of activities (5 lesson thematic unit)!

First, students will research various countries' traditions through the step by step guide of close reading the informational articles given, and a tradition- country matching activity.

Second, students will read original stories of various people celebrating this day around the world! As they read, they will identify key vocabulary words, work to define them, then process through matching their antonyms and definitions!

Third, students will dive deeper in reading an original, kid-friendly writing of China's folklore which tells the story of their own Valentine's Day. As they read they will practice the strategy of summarizing by illustrating each section via the handout provided.

Fourth, students will be guided through a creative writing exercise to write a love story (or not so in love story) that follows a South African tradition! *This included both a basic and advanced option to allow for differentiation and additional scaffolding

Fifth, students will use the hand out to facilitate a Danish tradition of making gaekkebrevs! Students will use the step by step process to make their own special Valentine's in this unique way! (*Includes notes for teachers to finalize lesson plan)
