Students create colorful three-panel travel brochures on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper, making great display items for social studies bulletin boards. The brochure describes the lodging, food, and clothing situations for soldiers of the Continental Army during the winter of 1778 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. In addition, students are asked to write a short description of General George Washington and locate Valley Forge on a map of Pennsylvania. The project takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours to complete, and incorporates history, language arts, and art. Project includes an assessment rubric, directions, and teacher lesson plan.
