When the British captured Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War, George Washington set up his winter camp at Valley Forge. The soldiers had a demoralizing winter as they battled harsh conditions. The author used photographs from Valley Forge taken during several visits, one in the summer and one after a heavy snowfall. The snowy pictures help the students to better visualize the struggles during the "Winter of Despair." A second day's lesson is included in this PowerPoint as the author shows York, PA, where the 2nd Continental Congress delegates escaped during the occupation of Philadelphia. This PowerPoint is easily adapted for a range of grade levels and includes text of explanation on many of the slides.
