This is a fun math activity for upper elementary students. The Value of Words Chart gives a monetary value to each letter of the alphabet such as A=$1, B=$2 all the way to Z=$26. The worksheet then has 10 questions where the students find the value of their name, their friend's name, their favorite color, etc. For question number 11, the students find the total amount for all 10 questions. A box is provided at the bottom of the page for the students to color an original abstract picture. The total arrived at for number 11 becomes the value of the student's picture and he/she is congratulated for becoming a true artist. I found this to be a great activity at the beginning of the year. It is a non-graded activity, and the artwork on the papers makes it a great math/art bulletin board display for the start of the year.
