Do you have a child who needs frequent reinforcement to be able to maintain appropriate levels of behavior? The schedule of reinforcement is the plan that determines when and how often
reinforcement will be delivered for appropriate behavior. When using a ratio schedule, reinforcement is based on the number of responses that occur. The number of responses required prior to
reinforcement can remain the same (i.e., fixed ratio), or they can vary (i.e., variable ratio or VR) each time. When using an interval schedule, reinforcement is based on the passing of an interval of time. This interval can remain the same (i.e., fixed interval), or it can vary (i.e., variable interval or VI) each time. Houten and Nau (1980) found that when the schedule of reinforcement was
variable interval rather than fixed interval, a child exhibited an increase in attentive behavior and a decrease in disruptive behavior and also completed more math problems. Moskowitz (2011) also found that variable ratio and fixed ratio schedules of reinforcement resulted in an increase of the occurrence and stability of the appropriate behavior.
