Mountain Math *Variables and Expressions*
In my classroom, I use this as a way to formatively assess math, after learning a new concept. The students receive 3 practice sheets, with the different mountains labeled at the top. Each mountain represents a different thinking level:
• Mount Columbia ( largest in Alberta): Practicing
• Mount Logan(largest in Canada): Understanding
• Mount Everest(largest in the world): Applying
As they complete each sheet (and get it checked), they go up to the Mountain bulletin board, and move their clothespin with their name on it. My kids love doing this because it allows them to take a movement break. After class I can see who is still working on the concept, and who has mastered it.
