This activity will help strengthen your students’ writing by teaching them how to vary the beginnings of sentences in a writing piece.
There are 2 components to this activity:
1) Instructional PowerPoint which shows students how to create different specific types of sentence beginnings for a specified topic
2) Types of Sentence Beginnings handout- give each student a copy to reference during the partner activity and also to keep in their writing folders for future reference
2) Partner activity for students to practice creating the different types of sentence beginnings for a specified topic
This activity is intended for students to work on with a partner. Give each pair of students a Sentence Beginnings sheet. Each pair will have a different topic (ex: the best house pet, a place I’d like to visit…). They are required to create 8 different beginning sentences about that topic, as if they were starting a writing piece about the topic. They are given different requirements for their 8 different sentence beginnings (ex: Begin with a verb ending in –ing, Begin with a phrase that tells “when”…). After partners finish, bring the class back together and allow students to share with the class.
