This lesson combines a powerpoint where students will learn about how to vary their sentence structure to make their writing more interesting and a practice page where they can work to actually improve some real paragraphs.
The PowerPoint covers:
-How long sentences should be
-Four types of sentence structures (simple, compound, complex)
-Why we need to do this
-Boring paragraphs vs. more effective paragraphs
-Opportunities to practice
The accompanying practice page asks students to practice identifying the different sentence structures then apply that knowledge to make a few sample paragraphs more effective. Finally, they are asked to compose their own paragraph using their new knowledge.
