This PowerPoint file presents five ways to vary sentence structure. These skills comprise one key component of many writing rubrics and state assessment tests.
Simple sentences, complex sentences, and compound sentences are compared; and suggestions for prepositional phrases and interjections are provided, as well.
Sample sentences highlight the important aspects of each structure. Students are guided to practice each structure themselves and to discuss their observations about writing them.
[ADDITIONAL NOTE: This file was updated in 2014. A reviewer in November 2013 seemed to provide a less-than-enthusiastic comment, and I have increased some of the instructional content of the presentation. I believe it has always been true to the product description; however, if you download this file and feel it does not suit your needs, please contact me in the Q&A section to let me know how I can help.]
