Vectors Class Project 6 - High School Physics - Honors and AP Physics 1

The Vectors Class Project 6 is an excellent Windows application. It is a highly motivating activity designed for Honors and AP Physics 1 high school physics students. The students will learn the addition of vectors graphically and mathematically. In this activity, they will take an imaginary trip to a number of cities, from 7 to 26, as determined by the teacher. The trip starts at city A, then they travel to cities B, C, D, etc. For every pair of cities, the distance and the direction are given.

The following are the learning objectives:

1. Students will calculate mathematically the distance between every city and city A.

2. Students will calculate mathematically the direction of every city in reference to city A.

3. Students will calculate graphically the distance between every city and city A.

4. Students will calculate graphically the direction of every city in reference to city A.

5. Students will calculate the percent of error when both methods are compared. If all the errors are less than 0.5%, then the activity was very successful.

It is recommended that teachers give a different set of values to each student, and the number of cities in the project to be between 10 and 12.

There are three good things about this product. First, a tutorial that explain the detailed mathematical and graphical solution of this problem is provided. Second, the students will be highly motivated while they work for at least 3 hours to complete the Vectors Project for 10 cities. And third, with this application, the teacher will be able to type the data (distance and direction) in a text file for 12 vectors in about 2 minutes, and then run the main program and print the Answer Key in another text file in seconds.

During this activity, the students need to have rulers, protractors, graph paper, pens of different colors, and scientific calculators. As it is explained in the tutorial Vectors Project Calculation file, the students also need to solve their vectors problems graphically. Give the students a few days to turn in their work.

It takes just a few minutes to learn to use this useful application. Simply place the Zip file in any folder or subfolder you want. Right click the mouse and select Extract all the files. The subfolder Vectors Project 6 is created. From inside the subfolder, just select the file Vectors Project 6 and you are ready to start. It is that simple.
