This is a day’s lesson to incorporate when studying culture, food, what makes us human, and as a way to promote equity and accentuate the similarities with students in your class, rather than the differences. I’ve created a safe and accepting of all lesson plan on vegetarianism. Students begin by talking about their favorite foods, charting these foods, a brief discussion on why our bodies need different food groups, and then an introduction into vegetarianism and eating beans with a carbohydrate to create a perfect protein. This is a lesson plan which promotes the truth of food making us more alike than different; it is accepting of every student, makes no one feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to be a meat eater or a vegetarian, but is a powerful way to bring the class together in a fun and safe way and who among us doesn’t LOVE the topic of food…especially eating FOOD!! Included is a Veg Fest mini-poster and sign up for food donations/parental involvement, a COOTIE CATCHER for students to cut out, color, and questions such as “Give at least two reasons who someone would be a vegetarian” and “Where do vegetables come from?” for some great engagement and fun in novel way, as well as a “VEGGIE FIGHT” cut-outs paring protein with carbs in a snowball fight activity kids will love! Of course, a day’s lesson, an overarching question: “How does what we eat make us more alike than different?” as well as Activator ideas (plural!), Mini Lesson, ACTIVITIES and Veg Fest food ideas to make your life easier and to ask for donations from parents/guardians, as well as a wrap up and ELA Common Core Standards. I made this lesson plan with my 4 year old vegetarian granddaughter in mind so that not only would she feel safe and understood in a class someday, but her meat-eating friends would feel equally safe and understood. HAVE FUN and please write me and let me know how this lesson worked for you and your students. Best best, Rockermom
