This lesson was designed for one of my classes that I call “Life Design”. I wanted to make a class that was built entirely around the concept that art is everywhere. This class not only promotes the relevancy of art and design in every part of our everyday world but it also promotes how important it is to learn the basics and build upon them to improve your artistic skills. Every lesson that I teach within this particular class is a vocation that students could use their artistic skills for a living. (Movie makeup, car design, illustration, fashion, tattoos, toys, video games, magazines, graphic design, theatre design, jewelry, comics/graphic novels, culinary arts, fantasy weapons, and murals)
This papers go along with my separate Vehicle Design powerpoint. They include a 3 page reading breakdown for students, an assessment page for students to fill out after the lesson to check understanding, the lesson plan, a list of vehicle design concepts for the group activity at the beginning of the lesson, and the grading rubric for the project.
For this project students may work individually or in pairs but the design must be original. I also have them think outside the box on parts and sections of their vehicles by forcing them to use mixed mediums instead of just sculpting the entire thing out of clay. They also have to explain the functionality of their vehicle as well as use specific art vocabulary to explain the aesthetics of their design.
