This lesson was designed for one of my classes that I call “Life Design”. I wanted to make a class that was built entirely around the concept that art is everywhere. This class not only promotes the relevancy of art and design in every part of our everyday world but it also promotes how important it is to learn the basics and build upon them to improve your artistic skills. Every lesson that I teach within this particular class is a vocation that students could use their artistic skills for a living. (Movie makeup, car design, illustration, fashion, tattoos, toys, video games, magazines, graphic design, theatre design, jewelry, comics/graphic novels, culinary arts, fantasy weapons, and murals)
This powerpoint goes along with my separate Vehicle Design papers. It starts out with a discussion about an example vehicle (intention, capabilities, functions, etc). after students discuss breaking a vehicle down in this way, they will break into small groups and pick a vehicle concept (in the separate papers) for which they will have a small amount of time to design a vehicle to meet the needs of the description (Underwater exploration, time travel/hostel aliens, etc). I discuss how form and function must go hand in hand and the aesthetics of a car are secondary to the function. It goes into aerodynamics, drag, lift, etc. I discuss how illustration works along side these design stages and give multiple examples of how these design techniques are used in video games and movies. I end the lesson by presenting the project and showing lots of examples of possible vehicle design concepts.
