In total this project is 19 pages long. It allows students to understand what it is like to enter "the real world" and open their eyes to the cost of things.
First students select an occupation, research the salary and calculate their earnings after taxes.
Secondly, students must find a houseplan to build and calculate the cost to build. The also must find a piece of property and calculate the taxes together. From there students calculate their mortgage every month.
Once completed, students find a vehicle and add the appropriate taxes and insurances to it. They calculate for 1-7 years payments and choose the payment they can afford.
After that they complete a monthly budget of expenses they incur from their house (hydro, water, taxes, insurance etc.)
Once that is complete they then fill out their monthly budget planner. This gives correct budgeting percentages for each month for things such as housing, transportation, entertainment, etc.
This is a project used for enrichment in the math curriculum. Assessment sheet included for each part of the project. Marks are allocated to every question.
Students will really enjoy the freedom of building and pricing their own vehicle and choosing their own house plans, while learning what it really costs to live on their own!
Can be used in place of math test or exam, or final math task for the year.
