Product Description
Velvet is a Spanish Television series that takes place in the 50’s/60’s. It is about Alberto the protagonist who inherits a prestigious fashion store “Velvet.” This show has worked wonders with my classes. It developed student understanding and comprehension skills. We are always looking for original materials and this was great. The first season is very good and with great storylines, very easy to understand, very clear and well-paced language and very minimal explicit material. (In the answer packets I noted what minutes to skip for explicit material.) If a student is absent they can watch it on Netflix. The questions on this episode are divided by the episodes in the original DVD. Netflix divides it just a little different but the students did not mind. Some students will get ahead at home and that is fine, the most they do at home is to put English captions but it does not take away from the listening and comprehension they need in the target language. It still helped them recognize words and connected it with the English.
Before beginning the show I divided them into groups and had them do research on Velvet, their characters, Spain Life and culture, Time Period, Fashion in the 50’s/60’s and finally actors. Have them present and then they can fill the free graphic that has the character map in my store. I ask them to do it in pencil so they can correct it as they watch the episodes later.
I included vocabulary and colloquial sayings in order it is said. The question are also in order and I developed them to serve as a guide for understanding as well as to keep them on task. I would recommend you start the year by talking in Spanish 70-90% of the time. At least in one or two months you should be ready to start watching the show. I had 5 classes test the materials last year. They really enjoyed the show and grew a lot from watching it.
