Velvet TV Show has worked great to develop student understanding and comprehension skills. The first season is great, very easy to understand, mostly very clear and well paced language and not explicit. I found some inappropriate parts and I have labeled them so you may fast forward it. If a student is absent they can watch it on Netflix.
I first have them do research on the show, their characters, Spain Life and culture, Time Period, actors and I have them fill out this graphic. They initially do it with their own research, I ask them to do it in pencil so they can correct it as they watch the episodes.
I have episodes 1-5 questions and answers. They serve as a guide for understanding and to keep them on task. I would recommend you start the year by talking in Spanish 70-90% of the time. By the second semester you should be ready to start watching the show. I had 5 classes test the materials last year. They really enjoyed the show and wanted to know what happened next. Some kids will get ahead and that is fine, the most they do at home is to put English captions but it does not take away from the listening and comprehension they need in the target language.
