Parts of Speech is a concept that I found out is an issue in all grade levels. Students are taught these skills explicitly beginning in kindergarten, yet when they enter 5th grade, middle school, or high school, you would think Parts of Speech was never taught to them. Why is it that students cannot remember the eight parts of speech? If you ask me, I think teaching them in isolation without application is the issue. Being able to identify common and proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunction, prepositions, articles, pronouns, and interjections is a simple task, but being able to apply these skills and concepts into their written and verbal communication is the issue. We must get out of the old habit of simply "IDENTIFYING" and begin "APPLYING". Maybe then, students will definitely know and understand the eight parts of speech with fidelity.
Let's remember...REAL - WORLD APPLICATION is the key to success.
