Challenge your students to have fun using collaborative inquiry approaches, scientific methods and computer technology to learn about animals. Allow students to build theories, chart data, draw conclusions and create products based on their own investigation.
Grade Level Suggested: 4 - 7
This project is quite comprehensive and it can be adapted in many ways to fit the needs of your students. This project allows students in grades 4 - 7 opportunities to design investigations based on scientific approaches to determine what each of the six classes of vertebrate animals needs to grow, survive and reproduce. The teaching and learning strategies offered in this unit incorporate interaction with the internet, problem solving through cooperative learning and hands-on experimentation, as well as through collaboration with other students outside the classroom via video conferencing or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). These strategies offer real time data to help students predict and analyze data especially during chicken embryo development.
The following resources are provided in this project.
- A Teacher Website that provides abundant implementation guides.
- A student friendly, Student Web Quest that offers links and project resources that scaffold learning for students in helping them to be successful in fulfilling requirements of the project.
- A full set of forms that include charts, rubrics and other materials in PDF that can be duplicated.
