After a unit on vertebrates and invertebrates, students apply their knowledge of the features of both groups as well as their phyla, adaptations, and role in a food web, and create an entirely new animal called an inventebrate! I recently completed this activity with my fifth grade students and they absolutely loved it and performed beyond my expectations! Included: Day 1 checklist for designing the new animal, Day 2 checklist to make observations of their newly created inventebrate, writing template to write an informational description about their new inventebrate with rubric, bulletin board idea and pictures, contest idea form,and literature resources. This can also be used in a Halloween activity for creating a new animal costume or in a space unit, meeting a new inventebrate from space. Very versatile!
