Students learn the Classical way
I use the classical model of chants and jingles to teach the characteristics of vertebrates, invertebrates, mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and the stages of metamorphosis. When I wrote these about twelve years ago, I began to see students go from struggling for days to memorize the list of facts to mastering them in one lesson.
On the day I teach each jingle, we spend time practicing it in fun ways repeating them over and over. I ask oral questions about the characteristics. Also, I have interactive notebook foldables for the information taught. Pages 2-5 can be cut apart and glued into an Interactive notebook. I conclude by passing out a written assessment to see which students might need more attention. We continue to review these for the remainder of the school year. While we are waiting in line or anytime there is a stall for any reason, I use that time to review. No accompanying music is needed.
I have added interactive notebook pages to go with each jingle.
Students love a sticker, so as an added touch for my students, I copy in color the printables of animals on pages 31-35 on an Avery Label product, the 8 ½” x 11” shipping label. These are also good for using on science related crafts/activities.
