Teach students to count up, on or back. This is a revised version of another product in my store- the vertical number line puzzles which counts lengths- number lines are length models- who knew! After some extensive research, here is a counting blocks style of vertical number line called a number 'path'.
Created for a cognitively impaired, special education student who struggled to make sense of counting, these build-able number block paths can be used to benefit all learners before they struggle!
Vertical number paths give students a different perspective on larger numbers versus smaller by aligning larger numbers to be higher than smaller. This is what kids understand- bigger things are taller or higher up than smaller things.
One completely filled in build-able vertical number path and three additional sets that are missing number puzzles of varying complexity are appropriate for later kindergarten, 1st and 2nd as well as for special education and intervention. The hardest puzzler has missing numbers where the 10s change. This is especially challenging when students are counting back. That change from 52, 51, ____, ____, is a BEAR for some students.
The number path is about 102 inches from start to end for all numbers to 120 (just under 9 feet) or 85 inches from 1 to 100 (just over 6 feet), about 43 inches for 50 numbers. Shrink on your copier for a smaller version.
Teaching tips are included for other activities that can be done on the blocks including skip counting and extra practice ideas for counting back from any number.
Negative numbers are not included like they are in my other vertical number line product. See thumbnails for both products for clarification. Thank you for your interest!
