Have your students reflect on the historical origins of Veterans Day while practicing their informational text reading of a primary source through the study of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s “Veterans Day Proclamation.”

In this lesson, students will activate prior knowledge about the history and and legacy of Veterans Day; employ multiple readings of an informational text primary source in order to gain content understanding; respond to guiding questions to scaffold their reading of an informational text primary source; use discussion and “think-pair-share” to solidify their understanding of the text and practice using textual evidence to support their answers; apply the information from a historical primary source to 21st century America; and reflect on the informational text, as well as on their own lives, through a post-reading response.

This lesson is aligned with the Common Core and National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Standards. It also includes accommodations for English Language Learners (ESOL, EFL, ESL), exceptional education (ESE), and gifted students.
