PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Using information from the military's website, I have created the following:

1) A fill-in-the-blank Branches of the Military worksheet with room for students to draw each logo. This can be completed together or a class, in small groups, partners, or independently. An answer key is included for this activity. {Editable}

2) A quiz on the information in the worksheet with an answer key included. {Editable}

3) A file that includes additional supplementary information about each branch of the military from their website.

4) An extension project with a rubric where students research a veteran on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. My students recently went on a class trip where we visited the Memorial, where they were able to do etchings on the soldiers' names to include with this activity. The file is editable if your students are not able to complete an actual etching (although they could do an art project with a veteran's name as well). I included two versions of this file- one with a prayer and one without. {Editable}

5) An extension project with a rubric where students write letters to veterans. {Editable}

6) A file that includes information on how to mail the letters to veterans (either VA medical centers or VA homes).

7) Links to videos and an article to deepen your students' insight into the history and importance of our military. Links include:
-two informative videos regarding the history behind Veterans Day.
-two tribute videos to our nation's military for discussion and/or writing prompts.
-four informative videos about The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
-six military reunion videos for discussion/and or writing prompts regarding the sacrifices and contributions that military families make on a daily basis.
-a link to an article (with accompanying pictures) that you can print and use for centers or a reading activity done whole class, small group, and/or independently. The article provides an opportunity for students to truly understand the sacrifices that families of deployed soldiers make every day.

{Editable files can be modified as necessary so that students fill in more or less information as you see fit.}

*Note: I have done all of the activities included with three 8th grade classes and two 4/5 classes. All five classes really enjoyed learning about our country's military. Many students even did independent research after we discussed information regarding our nation's military. The activities helped students gain a true appreciation for veterans, their many sacrifices, and why Veterans Day is so much more than a day off from school. It's even more meaningful to use these activities if students are able to meet a veteran as a way to either front-load them with knowledge and the ability to ask meaningful questions OR afterward as a way for them to reflect on what it means to truly honor our military and their families.
