This student booklet is used for a unit I teach on "Victorian Monsters". Students have the choice of either reading The Picture of Dorian Grey or The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (or both for an extra credit option). The package includes information (notes on Gothic literature, for instance) and activities (comparing and contrasting the bios of Stevenson and Wilde, for instance) that can be answered by either groups of readers. There are also comprehension questions specific to each novel. Students use the package of activities and questions throughout the unit completing a different task/activity for each day of the unit and submit the whole package for evaluation at the end. The activities can be used as guided tasks for literature circles too. The unit culminates in the students producing a documentary video on a specific topic of Victoriana. An evaluation rubric for the video is included.
