This file contains one video, which tells the story of two fictional characters (Peter Preterite and Irwin Imperfect), along with a one-page pdf document with the same text as the video (to be used as a handout).
It was inspired by a major flop of a lesson during my first year of teaching. I tried teaching Preterite vs. Imperfect in a very straightforward way and wasn't getting anything across to the students. Everyone left my classroom more frustrated that day, so I went home and tried to think of a better way for them to visualize the two tenses.
I came up with this story about two friends, one of which only speaks in the Preterite and another who only speaks in the Imperfect.
This video tells the story of the two friends, then takes a look at what that means about when to use the tenses, and finally it gives students some practice in determining which tense is which.
