This worksheet is used in a conjunction with a Cuban video that explores the domestic life of an unhappy 'ama de casa' who does all the chores around the house (6 minutes). In the worksheet, students first respond in English to questions about the concept of 'machismo'. They then fill in a graph about the roles of women and men in traditional and modern households. It is then followed by comprehension questions about the video. Finally, students use the subjunctive to describe the life and wants of the 'ama de casa.'
This is a very popular video with my students (see the preview for the link), for it leads students to reflect on traditional roles on the family, and is filled with Cuban cultural practices that the students haven't seen before (sorting rice, heating water, traditional breakfasts, how the floor is cleaned). Great for Spanish 2-5, in conjunction with domestic chores vocabulary.
Ojo! There is a part of the video in which the mother enters son's room and catches him on line. It is a bit racy, and I have skipped that segment (10 seconds) with less mature classes.
This worksheet can bet used in conjunction with a debate (subjunctive) over traditional roles in the household. Please contact me if you are interested in a debate sheet as well!
