Looking for resources to flip your classroom? Here's a great place to start!
Ecology 1 is the first of a five-part unit on Ecology. It consists of two sections, “What is Ecology?” and “Energy: Producers and Consumers.” The sections cover the categorization of the biosphere from species all the way to biome, biotic and abiotic factors, autotrophs and heterotrophs, and types of consumers (individual biomes and food webs are covered in later sections). The video can be watched in two parts as separate assignments, or as one block of instruction.
• An mp4 video file of a PowerPoint presentation consisting of two Ecology sections, “What is Ecology?” and “Energy: Producers and Consumers.” Each of the sections ends with a vocabulary review and goal review. The video was produced at a resolution that should play well on student laptops and smartphones.
• A “Guided Notes” section for students to fill out during the presentation, in Word Document format. At the instructor’s discretion, these can be used for grading purposes or kept in the students’ notes for studying. The notes can be edited by the instructor as necessary.
Flipping the Classroom:
This video was designed with the “flipped classroom” approach in mind. Try assigning the video and student notes sheet as homework rather than teaching the information during class time. This will allow you time in class to review the new material, address any misunderstandings, and engage the students in activities to test their knowledge of the topic.
