Vietnam War: more specifically, the US Involvement in the Vietnam War - A Close Reading Passage for UPPER ELEMENTARY

Before you check out this passage (a bonus passage is included in this pack - part 1 and part 2) on the historical events surrounding US involvement in the Vietnam War, have you checked out my social studies interactive reading response journal BUNDLED PACK? The bundled pack comes with my interactive notebooks 1 and 2, which includes 25 close reading passages and an interactive response journal activity for each passage. The passages take you through history starting with exploration and they continue through westward expansion. Also included in the pack are interactive activities for maps/globes and government that you can incorporate into the interactive notebook throughout the year. Click HERE for more details.

In addition, you can purchase notebook #3, which begins where notebook 2 left off, starting with the events of the Civil War. Click HERE for all of the details on notebook #3.

NOTE: Between notebooks 1-3, there are 36 close reading passages related to US History. All of the passages can be purchased separately, too. When you buy the passages individually, you will NOT get any interactive flippable activities that go with the passages. You will simply be purchasing the passage and the suggested teacher questions. It is still a wonderful resource without activities.

OR, get the entire NOTEBOOK #4 that includes all 23 passages and 23 activities.Click HERE for all of the details on the notebook 4.

Remember, interactive flippable activities are NOT included when purchasing passages separately.

The 23 close reading passages were written with 4th-5th graders in mind, but you may find they are also valuable resources for older students that need the social studies concepts broken into smaller parts to better understand.

Because these passages are non-fiction, and because they cover some of the same topics that are touched on in even high school classes (after all, the facts are the facts, no matter what grade you are required to teach them), there may be a few situations where these passages would work for grades well above fifth.

BUY NOTEBOOK #4 HERE.

==============================================

When I write my passages, I try to sum up the major events surrounding the topic of the passage. There may be other details you would like to include that I did not include, so you can pull other resources for that.

My goal is to write an article about the topic that is not as overwhelming as the often wordy textbooks. Textbooks can sometimes provide so much information that fourth and fifth graders cannot even figure out what the important event is.

This passage was written with 4th-5th graders in mind. The majority of the passages in my 3rd & 4th notebooks follow the social studies curriculum for the state of Georgia for 5th graders. Keep in mind though that they are non-fiction, so even older kids or kids from all states could benefit from the historical material. I have even had middle and high school teachers buy them to use with their special education students.

The push today in the elementary classroom is to teach the kids the skills of close reading. Focus on and analyze a shorter passage. Hold the details of the passage under a microscope to really examine it.

Teach a reading lesson while also introducing a social studies topic... it makes covering the social studies content so much easier.

I did not use any clip art on this because I wanted the focus to be on the words and not images.

There are no written student questions/worksheets, but suggested teacher discussion questions are included.

PLEASE.... if you see a mistake/typo, send me a message before you rate the product. I will fix it and get a corrected copy uploaded as soon as I can. Thank you ahead of time.
