This lesson is a week long supplementary activity aimed at High school students learning about the Vietnam war. Its purpose is to provide supplementary materials in addition to your school’s curriculum. This will introduce students to the idea of counter narratives and multiple perspectives in history. The goal is to help students become critical thinkers of history and analyze historical events from multiple perspectives. This will be accomplished as students construct a debate - learning how to defend and analyze historical sources for point of view and historical context. Students will differentiate between facts and historical interpretations and construct arguments based on primary and secondary sources. After students view sources, from debates, and debrief the activity, students will be challenged to think deeply about historical events, and how multiple perspectives are included (or not included) in curriculum texts. Although there will not be time to do this type of activity for every historical event, the goal for students is to think critically about history moving forward.
