One of the best tools for helping students to see what practicing science looks like in action is the popular Mythbusters series, featuring Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage developing scientific tests to determine the level of truth in commonly held notions about the world around us.
Regardless of the "myth" that they were trying to "bust," Hyneman and Savage worked through the scientific method in every episode -- developing a hypothesis, using models to test theories, making careful observations, and collecting and analyzing evidence to draw conclusions.
If those are behaviors that you want your students to master, consider showing them an episode of Mythbusters in your classroom. While watching, have them complete this viewing guide -- which will encourage them to spot the scientific method in action. Your kids will dig the lesson -- who doesn't like watching Mythbusters! More importantly, they will learn that there is a process used to complete scientific investigations.
By the way -- this activity makes for a perfect set of sub plans, too!
