Each day, at the start of my social studies lesson, I have my students complete one row of a Daily Review Worksheet as a warm-up. I have these run as worksheets for my kids to keep in their folders, and I also display the Review worksheet on my SMARTboard. The sheet is designed to give a spiraling review of history material taught thus far, especially material they may find problematic. This can be used in 5th grade as an overall review of hot-topic SOL question material. Since 5th graders in Virginia are tested on both 4th and 5th grade History SOL's, it's important to revisit all previous SOL's frequently.
This particular review focuses primarily on a 5th Grade Virginia Studies SOL, VS.8ab (Reconstruction - effects of Reconstruction on VA and Jim Crow Laws) with a 4th Grade review column (VS.2-VS.5) and a 5th Grade review column (VS.6 & VS.7). Check out my other Daily Reviews, which will slowly add in each Virginia Study SOL (VS.2-VS.10), while also revisiting previous SOL's. I hope you find this as useful as I have - my kids always struggle to remember the people, dates, events, etc. after we have completed the unit. These Daily Reviews keep the info fresh in their minds.
These would be great warm-ups at the beginning of class, but you could also use them as homework assignments or even graded assignments.
