Product Description
This set of 4 nonfiction reading passages supports both Virginia Studies content and Reading SOL skills. It's a two-for-one! I love using passages like this in my classroom to do double duty, and the kids really enjoy having some background knowledge before jumping into a new text (and you get to use SOL 4.6i-use prior knowledge and build background knowledge before you even start!). Each passage covers a VS standard and hits several reading standards. The main focus for each passage is main idea and details, as each passage ask students to underline the main idea and details in different colors and fill in a main idea and details chart. After that, there are several more questions covering a variety of topics.

Reading topics covered:
-4.6d identify main idea
-4.6e summarize supporting details
-4.4b use knowledge of word roots, affixes, synonyms…
-4.4a use context to clarify meanings of unfamiliar words
-4.6b formulate questions that might be answered in a text
-4.6f draw conclusions and make inferences

Virginia Studies topics covered (one per passage):
-VS.2e: describe how American Indians related to the climate and environment to secure food
-VS.3a,c: explain the reasons for English colonization, describe the importance of the charters of the VA Company of London in establishing Jamestown
-VS.4e: describe everyday life in colonial Virginia
-VS.5a: reasons the colonies went to war with Great Britain, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, VS.5b: identify roles of Virginians (Thomas Jefferson-Declaration of Independence)

I now have a new product for Reading 4.4b and c that you might also enjoy:
