Why use Reading Comprehension Passages for Social Studies?
-Combining nonfiction reading strategies and skills with content areas can increase students' engagement in the material and understanding of the information
-You are killing two birds with one stone: introducing or reviewing content information AND strengthening key reading skills
-You can pull out the reading passages for multiple uses: fluency practice, practice of content vocabulary, researching topics for a project, making a study guide to take home before a test
-Put it in your homework pack and have students read it one night and complete the questions another night. The added geography pages can also be homework pages for other nights of homework.
-It worked for my students- they showed an increase in their retention of content vocabulary and performed well on unit tests and the SOL test; parents raved about having a tangible review of the Virginia Studies material coming home each week that they could use to study with their child
