Want your students to review for the Virginia Studies and Reading SOL tests with one activity? These 20 task cards allow students to practice vocabulary skills while reviewing key concepts from the Virginia Studies curriculum (aligned with Reading SOL 4.4/5.4 and Virginia Studies VS.2-10). Note: this is not a review of specific Virginia Studies vocabulary, though some key words from the curriculum are included.
This is a great activity for centers, early finishers, and morning work. Students can use these task cards independently, with a partner, or in a small group. They will record their answers on an answer sheet and check their work using an answer key (both are provided).
Vocabulary Skills Practiced:
SOL 4.4a: use context to clarify meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases*
SOL 4.4b: use knowledge of roots and affixes*
SOL 4.4b: use knowledge of synonyms and antonyms*
SOL 4.4b: use knowledge of homophones
SOL 5.4b: use context and sentence structure to differentiate among multiple meanings of words
*The Virginia DOE suggested that students need extra practice with these standards (according to 2013-2014 reading test data).
You can print the cards in color or grayscale and laminate them for durability. Directions for preparation and use are included.
