This virtual field trip takes students “out to lunch” via a restaurant lunch menu link, then asks them to complete a series of functional, associated story problems requiring addition and subtraction with re-grouping. This mathematics activity can be done independently, with a partner, using laptop computers or IPads, or in a whole group setting using a SMART board; “Let s Go Out to Lunch” may be used as a hard copy activity, or can be scanned and attached in an online learning platform wherein students answer questions then submit completed work to an online dropbox. The digital version includes a link to a free online calculator. This activity also promotes digital navigation skills as per NETS standards. Virtual Field Trips are great to use the first week of school, or during the course of the school year as enrichment, direct instruction, or reinforcement projects; they support a blended learning environment, and are geared to promote individualized instruction at students’ ability levels.
