What educators are saying
Description
This resource is a great activity to engage your students in meaningful exploration and discussion regarding the powerful social justice themes and symbolism presented in Kadir Nelson's artistry. This virtual learning experience was created to mimic an in-person field trip to a museum or art gallery.
Whether you are teaching in-person, juggling the demands of hybrid learning, or in a fully virtual distance learning environment, your students will gain an opportunity to visually connect images to past and present social justice issues, experience an artist rendering of Black Joy as well as struggle, and critically analyze and interpret the meanings of 13 images from Kadir Nelson's collection.
Students will also discover links to videos in which Kadir Nelson passionately speaks about his motivation, craft, and process. Like in the traditional classroom Gallery Walk activity, students can move through the virtual gallery at their own pace, allowing for student choice, scaffolding, and differentiation opportunities.
