This step-by-step, guided learning virtual lab (adapted from McDougal Littell Classzone) gives students the opportunity to work through a controlled experiment to observe the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Added diagrams and the "Before you Begin --> Engage your Brain" section prompts student engagement. Adapted from "class zone", Better Biology has added components to include a pre-lab comparison of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, information on Bromothymol Blue and post-lab questions. Students also review the scientific method as part of setting up the experiment through the lab.
While the virtual lab directs students through each procedure step, it can also be used as an full, open-ended inquiry lab with students setting up their own experimental parameters. If running the actual experiment (using Elodea and snails from Carolina Biological) in class, students can complete the virtual lab as a pre-lab and then compare their data with the data obtained from the virtual lab. Alternatively, using the virtual lab at the end of the unit, as a review and prep for an assessment, offers a strong formative assessment.
