Have students play optometrist as they explore the use of convex and concave lenses and how they assist with vision correction. This teacher created lab sheet provides guided instruction for students to complete the Interactive Glencoe Science Online Virtual Lab on LIGHT WAVES & LENSES. Have students learn about how light is refracted through the eye to affect the focal point on the retina and explore how lenses are used to correct far and near-sightedness. Students will observe and record how each type and thickness of lens affects the refraction of light through a person's eye while viewing an internal diagram. Students attempt to identify which of six lenses can be used to correct the vision of six different patients attempting to see objects at various distances - they can even see how each lenses changes the focal point inside their eyes! Analysis questions guide students to demonstrate understanding about how the different shapes of lenses change the path of light, affect the focal point and why each eyeglass prescription may be different in shoe and thickness.
