Product Description
I call this activity “How to Judge a Book by Its Cover: An Introduction to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”

This takes approximately 90 minutes.

It’s a great way to introduce the key subjects and themes in Rebecca Skloot’s book.

This is a particularly useful activity for reluctant readers because it peaks their interest and provides the exposition needed to make sense of the book when they start reading Ch. 1 on their own.

In addition to introducing the book, the activity has an instructional focus on Visual Analysis, Inferences, Connotative Diction, and Critical Thinking.

To complete this activity, students either need a copy of the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, or the teacher needs to provide copies of the book jacket, along with the review “blurbs” on the back cover. They also need a piece of paper and a pen/pencil.

I hope you and your students enjoy this activity!
