This is a great way for students to learn about the elements and principles of art in their own way. I introduce this in the first week of school.
It gets them making art right off the bat (I give this as an intro sketchbook assignment) and it forces them to learn these in a really meaningful and engaging way.
This project goes through:
-what the elements and principles of art are (and why they're so important!)
-their task of creating a two page layout in their sketchbook that uses words and images to show each element and principle (super creative and open)
-a mini rubric to make marking easy, with clear "look for's"
TIP - I often do a creative "mind map" sketchbook cover page, and then this project goes at the BACK of their sketchbook. I get them to do all their notes and handouts at the back of their sketchbooks / all their art in the front half
